Dr. Kim received his B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea).  He has two M.S. degrees.  One is from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) in the field of Architectural Engineering and the other is from Michigan State University (East Lansing, USA) in the field of Civil Engineering.  He earned his Ph.D. degree with emphasis in structural engineering from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003.

Related to his industrial experience, he worked as a senior researcher with the Steel Structure Research Laboratory at the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (Korea) from 1992 to 1998 on the development of innovative and cost-effective structural systems.  He carried out lots of research projects successfully through extensive experimental and analytical investigations such as development of high-rise steel framed apartment, development of light-gauged steel frame housing, etc.

His expertise is centered on the design of steel-framed buildings and earthquake engineering.  His current research interests include partially-restrained (PR) connections, seismic behavior and design of steel joist girder structures, experimental techniques for full-scale and sub-assemblage structures, seismic rehabilitation of prestressed building systems, and prefabricated building systems with concrete-filled tube columns.
