Background:
Born in Kyoto, Japan. Received B.A. in Social Sciences from te Kyoto University of Education. Came to the United States in 1971. Received B.A. and M.A. in Japanese Literature and History from the University of California at Los Angeles. Received M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Southern California. Has been teaching at California State University at Fullerton since 1985. Major publications are: A Cultural History of Japan for Japanese Language Students and A Survey of Japanese Literature for Japanese Language Students.
