Dr. McLain teaches British New Imperial History
ROBERT MCLAIN was born in Chillan, Chile, and raised in Mississippi.  He completed his undergraduate training at Mississippi State University with an emphasis in Marketing and International Economics.  He returned to school several years later, earning his M.A. in history from the University of Southern Mississippi (1996) and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2003).

He specializes in the “New Imperial” history of the British Empire, emphasizing the roles of race, gender, and sexuality in ideologically undergirding and protecting colonial power, particularly in India.

He is the author of "The Indian Corps on the Western Front: A Reconsideration," published in War in the Age of Technology: Myriad Faces of Modern Armed Conflict, New York University Press, 2001.  He has also published twelve separate selections for the Gale Group's "History of the Modern World" web-based instructional series.  Each selection analyzes Anglo-Indian relations during the 1940's via primary documents from the Churchill papers.  His current research focuses on changing notions of masculinity and citizenship in  India during the early twentieth century.  His forthcoming work includes an article on the Punjabi nationalist Lajpat Rai, in addition to two other articles.

Dr. McLain regularly teaches History and Theory, World History, Historical Writing, World War II, and the British Empire.  He is currently serving as the Graduate Advisor.
