Accessing your course reserves

Instructors frequently put items such as articles or book chapters on reserve for students in the library.  More and more the library is digitizing the material and placing it on "E-Reserve".  This means the item is available to students online - so you can access it from home and read/print at your leisure.  To find out if your instructor has anything on reserve:

  1. Log into your student portal at http://my.fullerton.edu
  2. Within your portal click on the BLACKBOARD tab across the top of the page
  3. Once at that link you will need to click on the button to access your Blackboard account
  4. Once in Blackboard click on the MY CONTENT tab across the top
  5. Then click on COURSE RESERVES button
  6. Click on
  7. If any of your courses are listed there, just click on the course name
  8. A list of items will appear if there is anything on reserve for the class - simply click into the title
  9. Items on e-reserve will appear as an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file - just a digital copy of the original.  You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 7 or later). When the item displays, be sure to use the Adobe icons to save or print the item.

Library databases

Bibliographic databases are tools that index the literature of a field.  Typically they allow you to search across thousands of journals by subject or keyword to identify individual articles on your topic. Sometimes they will provide you with the full text of an article (i.e. the whole article is available for you to view, print or email).  But sometimes the database will only provide the citation and abstract (brief summary of the article).  In that case, you will use tools like SFX or Interlibrary Loan to track down the full article.

The Pollak Library subscribes to almost 200 databases on a myriad of topics.  As a CSUF student/faculty you are eligible to use any, but there are several that will be most relevant to nursing subjects.

Access these databases from the library homepage:

  • Research>>Find Articles will take you to a subject breakdown of our databases (select Nursing--General for databases most relevant to your nursing topics)
  • Quick Links>>Databases A-Z will take you to the full alphabetical listing of all our databases
  • Check out the guides/cheat sheets for several of the nursing-related databases below.

Getting the full-text of an article (SFX)

SFX (Special Effects) is a smart inter-linking tool that helps you track down the full text of an item.  It is embedded in all of our electronic databases.  For example, when you are searching a database such as CINAHL and find an item that only gives you an abstract/summary of the full text, look for the link to "SFX".  It may provide you with a smart link to the full text or lead you to another database which includes the full item or let you know that you will need to request it through Interlibrary Loan.

Using Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)

If there is something you want but we don't own it, we will obtain it for you from another library.  This service is called Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and it's free service for CSUF folks.

The way you utilize this service is through our online ILL software called ILLiad.  Once you determine that the library does not own an item, simply make your request through ILLiad and we will try to fill it.  We have modified the procedure slightly to be more seamless - instead of creating your own ILLiad account, we simply use your portal log-in to let you into your account.

Using ILLiad - 2 Ways

1.  Using ILLiad through SFX

As you search the databases, remember you will use the SFX tool to see if we have access to the resource you need.  If you come across something that we don't own, you will see the "Not Available at Pollak Library" message in the SFX window.

As you link into ILLiad you may be prompted to log into your portal.  Once in the system will automatically fill out the form for you - all you need to do is hit "submit"!

When the article arrives we send you an email alerting you to log into your ILLiad account to retrieve the article online.

2.  Using ILLiad manually

  1. Log into your ILLiad account anytime, anywhere from the library homepage
  2. To make a request, select either Article Request or Book Request from the main menu.
  3. You will need to fill out the request form completely - tell us exactly what you need by providing the full citation information
  4. Once you submit a request, you can track its status from the Current Requests tab.
  5. We will also send you an email when your item arrives.
  6. Articles are delivered electronically to your ILLiad account.  You will find them under the Your Articles tab.
  7. Books are delivered to the Circulation Desk at the Pollak Library and are held under your last name.  (Distance Education students may have their books mailed to their home address - and are responsible for return postage).

Turn-around time:  You should plan on 3-8 business days - although some items take longer and occasionally we are not able to obtain an item.  In either case, we will send you an email alerting you to the outcome.

Citing in APA style

Most instructors in the Department of Nursing require students to use the APA (American Psychological Association) style guide for their papers and literature reviews.  The APA Manual will tell you everything you need to know about writing a paper - from margins to pagination to reference lists and parenthetical references.

We keep a copy of the APA Manual at the reference desk - and almost any library will have a copy.  The library has also prepared a brief overview of this style with examples on how to cite different types of material (journal articles, books, websites, etc.).  Take a look at the APA handout here

Services for distance ed students

If you are a distance education student at CSUF (i.e. your class does not meet at the main campus), there are two special accommodations you should know about.

  • If there is a book or article that the Pollak Library owns only in print, you may request delivery of that item through your ILLiad account.  We will pull the book and mail it to your home (you are responsible for return postage) or we will digitize the article you want and post it to your ILLiad account.
  • If you request a book that the library does not own through ILLiad, we will mail that book to your home - you are responsible for return postage.
  • þ In order to be eligible for these two services, be sure to register as Nursing:  Distance Education as your "Department" when you fill out your ILLiad account form

Reference assistance

If you need help searching for material or obtaining the full text, please don't hesitate to ask our librarians.  We have several ways for you to obtain assistance:

  • Reference Desk - on the 1st floor of the North side of the library, see the librarian staffing the reference desk.  They are there every hour the library is open.
  • 24/7 Chat Reference - you can chat online in real time with a professional librarian 24 hours/7 days a week through this free service.  From the library homepage, click on Ask A Librarian for more information and to start using.
  • Telephone Reference - if you have a fairly quick question, call our reference hotline at 714.278.3284
  • Research Consultation - if you need more in-depth assistance, consider making an appointment with a librarian.  For more information and to fill out the online request form, see the Ask A Librarian link from the library homepage
  • Nursing Liaison - Rachael Clemens is the designated librarian for the Dept. of Nursing.  She is glad to field any questions or help point you in the right direction.  Call her at 714.278.7543 or email her at rclemens@fullerton.edu.

Borrowing privileges and other libraries

As a CSUF student, you have automatic borrowing privileges with any Cal State University.  For more information on these privileges, see the Borrowing & Reserves section under Library Services on the library homepage

Please note that the Cal State University system and the University of California system do not have reciprocal agreements.  As a California taxpayer, you can walk into any UC and utilize their resources in-house but you will not have remote access to their databases.

Connecting from home

Accessing all of the library's electronic resources from off-campus has never been easier.  Simply start at the library homepage http://library.fullerton.edu to begin.  Some material is freely accessible by anyone (library catalog, research guides, etc.) but resources like our databases and electronic journal subscriptions are for current CSUF folks only.  Our licensing agreements with these providers require that we implement some method of authentication to gain access.  We are using "EZ-Proxy" which works with almost any browser and most firewalls.

When you try to enter a subscription resource (such as a database) you will be prompted to log into your student / faculty portal.

Students

  • Username = Your campus-wide ID number
  • Password = Your pin number

Faculty

  • Username = Your computer/portal username
  • Password = Your computer/portal password

If you experience any technical problems logging in from home, please call the Titan Help Desk at 714.278.7777 or email helpdesk@fullerton.edu

After you log in, you will have a 4-hour window of time - so if you switch databases or resources, you won't have to re-log in again.
