Philippe Zacaïr was born and
raised in Guadeloupe, in the eastern Caribbean. He received his Ph.D. in 1999
from the University of Paris-Sorbonne Nouvelle in France. He specializes in
the history of Caribbean nationalist movements in the nineteenth century. His
research interests also include the history of migrations within the Caribbean
basin, as well as race and Caribbean identity. Zacaïr has published in
Cahiers du Monde Hispanique et Luso-Brésilien and Cahiers Charles V.
Since his appointment at Cal State Fullerton in the Fall of 2002, he has
taught classes on colonial and modern Latin American history and will be
developing new courses such as Race and Revolutions in Latin America and
the Caribbean, Introduction to Hispanic Caribbean History and
Cuba Through Film.
