Dear Student,
Thank you for your interest in CPRL 110 Religions of the World. This section is WEB based. Students must attend two on-campus exams (Saturdays, 3/13/10 and 5/15/10; 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM). Weekly assignments are due via the Internet (using BlackBoard). Contact pLevesque@Fullerton.edu before the first week of the semester. In this course we look at the beliefs and practices of Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We also discuss secular humanism and a few new religious movements.
This course fulfills General Education (GE) requirement "Introduction to the Humanities" C.2 (formerly III.B.2). Each student will need to purchase a computer program entitled Revealing World Religions 3.3 DVD (available at Little Professor Book Center, 725 N. Placentia Ave. Fullerton, 714-996-3133). There is no paper textbook. You must have access to a computer with an Internet connection (high speed DSL/cable required; no dial-up). 1) From Blackboard, print out weekly “Workbook” pages. The pages will be completed as you engage in the weekly assignments. You will use these pages to study for the two on-campus exams. [Turn in two times; 5 points each; each 1% of grade; total 10 points.] 2) On Blackboard, watch the weekly presentation (text and audio) by Dr. Levesque and answer the Blackboard questions following the presentation. [1 point each/ 15 weeks; each 0.2% of total grade; total 15 points.] 3) On Blackboard, watch the weekly video(s) and answer the Blackboard questions following each video. [1 point each/ 15 weeks; each 0.2% of total grade; total 15 points.] 4) Watch/listen/read on your copy of the DVD Revealing World Religions the assigned sections for the week; complete the onscreen exercises (your answers will be sent to Dr. Levesque via your Internet connection.) [5 points/ 13 weeks; each 1% of total grade; total 65 points.] 5) Complete the Blackboard weekly quiz. [15 sets of questions; 7 points each set; each 1.0% of total grade; total 105 points.] 8) Email weekly reflection to the professor. [15 reflections; each 0.2% of total grade; total 15 points.] During the course of the semester, each student will also: -- On Blackboard, add seven posting to the discussion board [7 + 1 homepage]. 2 points each/ 8 posts; ea. 0.4% of total grade; total 16 points.] -- On Blackboard, add one response to another person's posting from the three previous postings [3 + 1 survey]. [1 point each/ 4 responses; ea. 0.2% of total grade; total 4 points.] --write one paper (three-four pages in length). [The paper is worth 30 points; 6% of total grade; total 30 points.] --take two on-campus Exams. [100 points for the midterm exam; 20% of total grade. 125 points for the final exam; 25% of total grade.] Total = 500 points This course is a user-friendly, step-by-step learning endeavor. Taking an on-line course requires motivation and commitment. You must keep up with the assignments. You will participate in this class through your on-time completion of the assignments. This is a three-unit course, requiring approximately five to eight hours of your time per week.
