Teaching Philosophy Curriculum Vitae Philosophy of Teaching I approach the teaching of writing as a collaborative effort between the student and myself. Through peer review groups, analytical group discussions of readings, and individual conferences throughout the semester course, classes develop into a community of writers, where students and instructor alike are constantly developing and sharing our writing and critical thinking skills. Because students come to class from a variety of backgrounds, interests and cultural experiences, it is my responsibility as the instructor to create a safe, intellectual environment to enable students to express their voices and opinions through writing and oral responses. It is important to constantly challenge students through implementing tools such as various essays assignment, and educational videos so students will look inside themselves and discover their writing strengths, their own identity, and overcome their writing weaknesses. I constantly stress to students that their academic and personal success depends upon active participation. Passivity leads to failure. My classes revolve around the idea that students need to take an active approach to their reading and writing skills, just as they need to take an assertive role in their college and post college career. The pedagogical methods that I discuss in the composition courses enable students to become improved writers across the curriculum. Each semester is a new beginning, a "re-birth" of my teaching abilities as I learn not only from my peers, but just as importantly, from my students. I continually assess my performance and impact on the classroom, as well as re-evaluate my own philosophy of teaching. Receiving feedback from my students at various points in the semester keeps me in touch with what methodologies are effective and what needs changing to continue to provide a conducive atmosphere for the facilitation of information between my students and myself. My goal is to reflect my enthusiasm for writing to students through my active participation and positive feedback on their writing skills. Carrie V.
